Copenhagen suburb Vallensbaek
Copenhagen
Miljoskarm independently designed and developed the manufacturing process for the first commercial noise barrier using sound-absorbing material made from recycled fiberglass.
This noise barrier was installed along the busy Sdr. Ringvej road in Vallensbæk, a suburb of Copenhagen—just a short distance from a previously installed barrier from 2016. The new installation helps reduce traffic noise in the large residential area of Højstrupparken and, during construction, also helps mitigate noise from the ongoing development of the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail.
Comparing the manufacturing processes of 100 m2 of a mainstream noise barrier construction with Miljoskarms design, the Engineering consultant COWI calculated that our solution saved 60% of the CO2 emission and 40% of the energy consumption by substituting virgin materials with upcycled waste materials. The long-term commercial benefit of Miljoskarms innovative products is the re-recyclability of our recycled insulating products.
This solution addresses the global environmental issue of the absence of recycling of exponentially increasing amounts of composite waste. Giving end-of-life wind turbine blades and other composite products a new life as acoustic insulation in noise barriers further addresses increasing noise issues when improving the quality of life in urban environments by reducing harmful noise levels. This solution constitutes a new contribution to the circular economy by replacing virgin materials with upcycled waste products that in addition may be recycled several times.
