Description

In 2019, Megaplex, a Netherlands-based modular housing manufacturer, initially adopted a lower-efficiency version of the Hamwells Blue cleantech system for heating, cooling, and hot water. With the release of higher-efficiency versions (Blue 21 and HE) in late 2020, they shifted to installing two infrared panels and a 50-liter boiler, removing the need for a heat pump and saving €3,750 to €4,750 in material costs. This change improved operational efficiency and sustainability. Megaplex standardized the Blue HE system, completing a 44-unit project in June 2023. The adoption of Blue HE brought enhanced energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and significant cost savings, highlighting Megaplex’s commitment to sustainable and innovative housing solutions.

Impact & Result

The savings on surrounding systems can achieve a direct return on investment when the Blue is used as the basis of the complete technical concept. In renovation projects this will not always be the case. Here the ROI in general is achieved between 5-7 years. The use of a Blue system can result in up to 558 kWh savings per person per year (pppy) for providing the hot water (@ € 0.35/ kWh = € 195.30 pppy). According to the Dutch NTA8800, this results in a 190 kg lower CO2 emission pppy.

Solution Spotlight

The Blue shower systems use the heat of the shower wastewater to preheat the cold water supply. By doing this, the demand for hot water drops significantly, which means a lower energy consumption. In turn this allows for a smaller hot water system, reducing the installation costs of the complete installation. The energy performance of the building will improve considerably and less CO2 will be emitted. The Blue has been specifically developed for multi-storey construction and renovation projects where the highest possible efficiency must be achieved on one floor. Therefore the Blue is the ideal fit for: - apartment buildings - hotels - care centers - sport clubs - holiday parks - town houses - etc.
