Nitrogen and phosphorous are nutrients whose presence in wastewater, combined with climate change, is accelerating the proliferation of algal blooms around the world. While wastewater treatment plants are one of the main sources of these nutrients, they were not designed to treat them. In order to eliminate nitrogen and phosphorous, wastewater treatment plants would have to nearly double their facilities and increase the use of chemicals. Kourant inc. developed a patented technology capable of solving this problem without increasing the size of the wastewater treatment plant or using any chemicals. The EBR (Electro-BioReactor) technology combines biological and electrochemical processes to treat nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater, which in turn reduces the production of nitrous oxide, thereby reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Reduction GHG emissions is evaluated at 1182 530 kgCO2e/ year when considering a flow of 500 m3/day of wastewater treated
  • Reduction of sludge generation by 40%
  • Reduction of criteria air contaminants (CACs) emissions

The Financial Benefits

  • Can induce up to 40% less CAPEX
  • Can induce up to 25% less OPEX
