Maturity stage TRL 7 - Prototype testing in the real world

The current trend in IT is a dramatic increase of data collection in datacenters. Today the demand for energy-intensive applications in these structures is ever increasing due to, notably, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, cybersecurity, and meteorological models. Over half of all the electricity required to power data centres is intended for cooling and thermal management systems. DaTEG™ is an adaptive system designed to reduce power consumption at the server level and/or to increase the performance of the CPU/GPU. DaTEG™ is customizable to operate in two different regimes. The first maximizes overall power saving at server levels (power saving mode) while the second allows operations in turbo boost mode for prolonged duration without risking of CPU overheating (overclock mode). GemaTEG also designed an innovative system that provides thermal and electrical energy at the same time. Contrarily to mainstream systems of solar energy harvesting, which are not only inefficient but can also quickly overheat, CentraTEG™ integrates thermoelectric technology applied to solar systems with concentration tube making it highly efficient and safe. The system is based on mature concentration tubes technology with a dedicated integration of TEG modules that are able to generate extra electrical energy through a dedicated control unit.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Cooling CPU below 60°C independently from the work load (DaTEG)
  • Co-generate electrical energy together with thermal energy with an overall efficiency of over 70% (CentraTEG)
  • Reduction of CPU power consumption up to 20%, while increasing computing power up to 40% (DaTEG)
  • Reduction of 30% in the number of servers needed, resulting in a decrease in energy consumption reduction
  • Absence of harmful elements like lead, chrome, cadmium, gallium, selenium and indium in both DaTEG and CentraTEG
  • The standard module of 4.6 square meters of GemaTEG provides thermal energy replacing the need of a yearly quantity of 369 cubic meters that produces 701 Kg of CO2.

The Financial Benefits

  • CentraTEG is designed to reduce the payback time where feed-in tariff on solar installation becomes negligible
  • DaTEG will have a total cost after industrialization phase estimated to be 50% lower than equivalent solutions
  • CentraTEG will have pay-back period comparable to PV systems but without energy loss and cleaning/maintenance expenses
