The Co-operative Glaernisch Textiles is a contemporary form of economy in the light of solidarity and
of respect for good ethical, social, ecological and economic conditions. Based on hemp and flax/linen
as the traditional Swiss fibre plants, the co-operative reinstalls the entire value chain in Switzerland
to produce ethical textiles and fashion.
This includes every single process step from growing and
harvesting the straw, processing it to fibres, cottonizing, washing and colouring them, spinning,
weaving, design, (customer oriented) tailoring to honest marketing and sales.
In a 360 degree approach, every single component of the plant material is used according to its best
kind and case of use. Maintained in an industrial partner network and in this comprehensive view,
food, medicine, construction materials, textiles, industrial components i.e. fibres for body parts,
paint, oils, and more are included and define the range of products. The typical focus of the Co-
operation of Glaerrnisch Textiles itself are the textiles: from fashion in the familiar appearance
assumed by former cotton fabrics on the consumer side, to kitchen, bathing and bedding ware all the
way through to rather technical products such as sun sheds purely made of hemp. A part of rougher
hemp and flex fibres go into insulation material for building construction.
While started and still working with used production equipment, the co-operation has a horizon to
install new industrial machines particularly for the cleaning and spinning of the fibres into
standardized yarns. Therefore through such standardization, seemingly common products but made
in a different, pure and responsible way are meant to enter the market which demands good quality
and design with no (ethical) question mark at all.
In the context of climate change and global warming, the replacement of cotton and oil-based
products through natural fibres at the same or even higher quality level includes an enormous potential to reduce the global amount of carbon dioxide thanks to farming natural fibres and thanks to replacing harming products through such made of natural fibres. Our co-operation including the
network of industrial partners covering the 360 degrees contribute to a quickly rising level of trusted
demand for natural fibres farmed by a growing number of farmers on the one side and of safety of
delivery for large industrial amounts of natural fibres, semi-products and products on the side of
business, commerce and trade.
