EXXOSQEL is an innovative start-up that developed a solution by which the mechanical strength of glass can be significantly increased and as a result, glass can be lightweighted for the same target stress requirements. Lightweighting results in a significant reduction of energy and raw materials required. In addition, since an existing melting furnace will only require less pullrate for the same down stream hot-forming capacity, the electric energy share for heating can be increased - a limit when it comes to current operations where melting furnaces are pulled very high. The technology may be considered a break-through solution for glass as there is an increasing pressure to reduce packaging weight, for example. In addition, for the construction sector, the solution can result in lower weight windows, and in turn, this might require significantly effects on requirements on supporting structure (concrete, steel) for buildings. Finally, the glass will still be recyclable.
