Agricultural sector uses about 70-80% of the global water resources, almost three times of water used for industrial sector. The implementation of Solvay Solution OXYSTRONG 15 at Milan-Nosedo WWTS to disinfect waste water allows it to reach the high quality standard for irrigation with lower economical average impact versus mainstream alternative (UV lamps) and no toxic by chlorinated by products generated by Sodium Hyopochlorite. The public authority ARPA verifies the quality in terms of chemical and microbiological parameters, acute toxicity test (Daphia magna) and algae growth test (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata); all controls have demonstrated high quality of the water from the biotic indexes, the improvement of soil permeability of the area and restoration of biodiversity and freshwater fishing activities derived from over 10 y point of view. The treated water is reused to irrigate of 3700 hectars, producing cereals able to cover demand of 140.000 people/year.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Generates NO chlorinated by-products (see attached table), To homogenous dosage of a water solution to a water stream is easier to be controlled then homogenous irradiations due to sediments and algae deposition, Liquid dosage requires much
  • Waste water disinfected with Oxystrong is used for irrigation of 3700 ha where high-value crops are cultivated (corn, rice, grassland & wheat) corresponding to the production of cereals feeding 140.000 people (based on cereals consumption per-capita
  • Tests preformed by regional Local Authority for the Environmenton on irrigated area have showed improvement of soil permeability, restoration of biodiversity and freshwater fishing activities
  • Oxystrong(R)15 rapidly breaks down to innocuous products (vinegar, water, and oxygen) as demonstrated in post treatment tests (no chlorinated by product. Sustainability of Oxystrong1 5 is even visible through the improvement of soil permeability of the ar
  • 10% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to sodium hypochlorite Regional authority for the environment verifies the quality of water in terms of chemical, microbiological parameters, acute toxicity (Daphia magna) and algae growth (Pseudokirchneriella subca
  • Regional authority for the environment verifies the quality of water in terms of chemical, microbiological parameters and execute as well acute toxicity test (Daphia magna) and algae growth tests (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata); all controls have demons

The Financial Benefits

  • Oxystrong(R) 15 versus mainstream alternative UV irradiation is less capex intensive and more flexible operations allowing better cost-perfomance: Oxystrong 0,006-0,008 €/m3, UV 0,009-0,010 €/m3 water
  • The water reuse allows the farmers to save money in purchasing water from the municipalities (lower costs then fresh water), as well the WW station has economic return by providing water to municip.
  • Oxystrong(R) 15 has very low maintainance costs (just regular checks) versus mainstream alternative UV irradiation requiring replacemet of damaged lamps and cleaning of lamps from algae and sediments.
