At BioPlaster Research, we take pride in partnering with industry leaders to create innovative, sustainable materials tailored to their needs. In line with our commitment to reducing plastic waste, we have signed a Letter of Intent with Great Packaging International for an annual USD 5M agreement to supply our biodegradable packaging films. Made from sargassum, an invasive algae, these films provide a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Great Packaging International sought an eco-friendly solution that retained the durability and flexibility their clients require. Collaborating closely, we optimized the films' mechanical properties and shelf life to ensure seamless integration into their manufacturing processes.
The implementation of Bioplaster’s biodegradable films significantly reduces CO₂ emissions and plastic waste in packaging. With a carbon footprint of 0.00848 kg CO₂eq per bag, our films offer an 81% reduction in GHG emissions compared to traditional HDPE bags, which emit 0.045 kg CO₂eq per bag. At full production capacity (1,800 tons annually), this equates to a yearly savings of approximately 1,972 metric tons of CO₂eq.
Our solution transforms invasive sargassum seaweed into innovative biomaterials, with a focus on biodegradable films and bags for packaging. These eco-friendly alternatives replace traditional plastics, offering an 81% reduction in carbon footprint while being fully biodegradable, even in landfill conditions, without requiring specialized infrastructure. Made from abundant and cost-effective sargassum, our films are versatile, moisture-resistant, and customizable for various applications, including food and consumer goods packaging. Unlike conventional plastics that persist in the environment, our materials naturally degrade, leaving no harmful residues. By addressing plastic pollution and sargassum overgrowth simultaneously, our solution provides a sustainable, scalable, and circular alternative for global packaging needs.
