Gramitherm Adopted by City of Charleroi in France to Transform Couillet High School's Energy Use

Description

The Department of Public Equipment of Charleroi’s city, used the Solution as part of the renovation of the Couillet’s high school. The aim of the renovation of Couillet’s school was to drastically reduce the energy consumption of the school well balanced with the environmental impact. To that aim, 120, 160 and 240 mm thickness Gramitherm® panels covering 1,260 m2 of facade walls were installed, covered with wood and brick siding.

Impact & Result

The solution contributes to a 55% reduction in annual gas energy consumption and a 23% decrease in electricity usage for the school. Additionally, it has successfully trapped 15 tons of CO₂ equivalent, highlighting its positive environmental impact.

Solution Spotlight

Gramitherm is a bio-based insulation batt, with a negative carbon footprint ( capturing 1.5kg of CO2eq per kg of product), made from an abundant raw material: grass. Energy efficiency of buildings is one of the main targets to make the world carbon neutral as soon as possible. We aim at delivering a solution to this problem by providing an insulating material at least as good as any other solution on the market for its insulating properties, but whose environmental impact is unrivalled. Indeed our primary component is grass, an element naturally abundant all over the world, with a short reconstitution cycle time. Furthermore, our product has an estimated lifetime of at least 50 years, and it is easily and fully recyclable afterward.( it’s mainly grass after all ! - the product has over 90% of natural fibres right now, and we expect to be 100% natural by the end of 2024).
