LOUIS DREYFUS ARMATEURS (LDA)
Saint-Nazaire
bound4blue has successfully installed three 22-meter-high eSAILs® on the Ville de Bordeaux, a ro-ro vessel operated by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA). This milestone represents the first-ever deployment of fixed suction sails on a ro-ro ship owned by a leading European shipowner. Completed in under two days in Vigo, Spain, the installation aligns with Airbus' commitment to reducing CO2 emissions from maritime logistics by 50% by 2030. The eSAILs® enhance propeller efficiency by 20%, showcasing wind-assisted propulsion as a key solution for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
bound4blue is advancing this technology with additional agreements for installations on the MV Atlantic Orchard, Odfjell’s chemical tanker, and Eastern Pacific Shipping's Pacific Sentinel. These projects underscore the growing adoption of eSAILs® to cut fuel consumption and emissions across diverse vessel types.
The Ville de Bordeaux installation is expected to deliver annual savings of 2,705 tons of CO2 and 845.3 tons of fuel—approximately 10%—equating to $591,710 in economic benefits. Results from onboard tests have been officially documented and are in the process of certification by Bureau Veritas, further validating the effectiveness of this innovative technology.
eSAIL® is an innovative Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) that uses active boundary layer control through suction to harness wind energy, providing a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional propulsion. It generates 6-7 times more lift than conventional sails, with low power consumption and no mechanical complexity, ensuring easy and reliable operation. Its compact design maximizes aerodynamic efficiency while minimizing impact on ship stability, deck space, and visibility. eSAIL® significantly reduces fuel consumption, lowers emissions, and helps ships meet environmental regulations like the EEXI and CII, ultimately leading to cost savings in both operational and capital expenditures. This technology is a game-changer for the maritime industry, combining environmental benefits with economic savings.
