Enfield Council
Einfield
Enfield Council, a Greater London borough, collaborated with Excess Materials Exchange to launch its own digital platform to allow the materials coming out of demolition projects to be reused. Initial focus will be on the Council’s Meridian Water project, its £6 billion flagship regeneration project in Edmonton, which will provide 10,000 homes and 6,000 jobs in the borough. The platform will then include all Council projects to allow for materials to be exchanged and reused across the borough.
The solution has the potential to reduce CO₂ equivalent emissions by 25% compared to the status quo, while also lowering the costs associated with redevelopment projects. This dual impact supports both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.
Excess materials and products are currently not exchanged in a structured manner on a large scale. Mounting environmental pressure, consumer awareness and circular ambitions put pressure on companies for taking responsibility, they need to scale up their currently small scale initiatives. Excess Materials Exchange operates a B2B digital platform where companies buy and sell any type of excess materials, products and waste streams. The platform matches materials to their highest value reuse option. On the platform, the Resources Passport Module gives materials an identity and collects material data in a structured manner which allows to find high-value reuse options. The Tracking & Tracing Module allows users to follow physical resource streams by linking them to their digital twin through identifiers (i.e. bar-codes, QR-codes, RFID chips). This enables to communicate when and where products and materials will be released. The Valuation module quantifies the financial, environmental and societal impact of materials to understand which next use application is the most beneficial. Lastly, the Matchmaking Module facilitates the matchmaking of excess materials to new reuse options thanks to Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence.
