Port of Fréjus
Fréjus
In July 2019, the Port of Fréjus in France implemented Biohut©, an innovative solution to enhance marine biodiversity in port environments by restoring disrupted aquatic ecosystems. This initiative faced a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted operations. Collaboration resumed in May 2021, leading to successful progress. Biohut© uses specially designed cages to provide sheltered habitats for juvenile fish, significantly mitigating the adverse impacts of port activities on marine life. The initiative has resulted in enhanced biodiversity, improved ecological balance, and increased fish populations, demonstrating the potential for integrating cleantech solutions in port operations globally.
Environmentally, the project enhances biodiversity by providing habitats for various fish and invertebrate species, which contributes to ecosystem health and resilience. The use of recycled materials for Biohut® construction minimizes waste and reduces the demand for new resources. Economically, the project offers substantial savings by reducing the need for traditional, resource-intensive restoration methods.
The Biohut is an artificial habitat that allows to restore the ecological function of nursery, originally provided by shallow rocky or sandy bottoms, when they have been impacted and degraded by coastal constructions (ports, marinas, outfall at sea, etc.). The design of the Biohut comes from observation and understanding of the ecological functions provided by natural nursery areas. Biohut provides a complex natural substrates that is colonized by rich fauna and flora, that is the food resource of juvenile fish, and a physical shelter where predators are not able to reach juvenile fish. The Biohut, by its size and facility of installation, is easy to install, even at big scale, in ports, marinas, or on all kind of infrastructures, and it is also a perfect support to raise public awareness about marine biodiversity protection.
