Label Date January 25, 2021
From United Kingdom
Maturity stage TRL 7 - Prototype testing in the real world

CCell builds artificial reefs from recycled rebar, mimicking the shapes and properties of naturally occurring reefs. The reefs are powered with renewable electricity, producing a chemical reaction within the seawater that causes limestone rock to form around the reef structure. This rock provides a foundation for coral restoration and marine wildlife while strengthening the defensive properties of the reefs. CCell’s advanced modelling capabilities, combined with electronics and cutting-edge wave-energy capture technology, allows this solution to be customised for a given area. Local expertise, coral out-planting and education initiatives are able to support and boost this solution.

The Environmental Benefits

  • 0.05mm/day limestone rock accumulation on the reef structure due to electrolysis
  • 10kW of renewable energy produces an effective 200m reef in 11 months
  • 96% reduction in CO2 emissions
  • 52% less energy consumption overall

The Financial Benefits

  • 10% cheaper than mainstream alternative
  • less than 2 years payback time
